Canada Post to Make New Offers to Union

Days after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said it would stop delivering unaddressed direct mail, Canada Post said it will provide new global offers designed to move negotiations forward.

In an effort to apply pressure to Canada Post, CUPW said it would stop delivering Neighborhood Mail after it expressed disappointment in the post’s most recent contract offer. The union had refused overtime since spring, but it was finding this move ineffective as mail volumes has dried up. Canada Post said its new offers will allow the parties to return to the table this week. “With a planned return to the table, we have asked CUPW to amend its strike action and deliver the unaddressed flyers (Neighbourhood Mail) that are currently trapped in our network,” Canada Post said. IMAG member ePost Global is quoted in this recent Supply Chain Dive article, which notes the threat of a lockout by Canada Post or a full-blown strike by the union if an agreement is not reached soon. Either approach would further undermine Canada Post’s difficult financial situation, especially on the cusp of peak season.
