Possible Rotating Strikes in Canada

The following message, received via UPU, points to the possibility of rotating postal strikes in Canada, as earlier as Monday, October 22.

***

The designated operator of Canada, Canada Post, asks us to inform the designated operators of other Union member countries about ongoing negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

CUPW has issued a strike notice, which means that they will be in a legal position to strike as early as Monday, 22 October 2018. Should rotating strike action occur, the postal service will continue to operate.

Rotating legal strikes may be isolated to one or two specific locations at a time, affecting those areas for a period of 24 hours. In that situation, Canada Post would continue to accept, process and deliver mail and parcels in all other areas. Once the temporary disruption ends, it would return to normal operations in the affected locations.

Canada Post is committed to arriving at a negotiated settlement. It continues to pursue that goal while making every effort to minimize the impact of any disruption.

Canada Post thanks all designated operators for their understanding and will inform them via EmIS once the situation has returned to normal.
