USPS Rates to Increase Jan. 24

The Postal Service announced increases in international postage rates for its competitive products, as well as changes to country groupings, set to take effect January 24, 2021. Published prices for Priority Mail International will increase overall by 5.1 percent, with Commercial Plus prices equivalent to Commercial Base. Deeper discounting may still be made available to customers through negotiated service agreements. ISC Delays Could Hurt Int'l Election Mail Preparedness

The Postal Service’s preparedness for processing international election mail, including military and diplomatic mail, is at risk based on mail processing delays at the Chicago International Service Center (ISC.), a recent Office of Inspector General report has found. The OIG conducted its study in mid-August when the Chicago ISC was still struggling with processing delays due to staffing shortages and restrictions in some countries on outbound mail. Upon a site visit in late September for another report, the OIG noted the appearance of improvements in operations and no mail sitting on the workroom floor.

OIG Finds USPS Won't Fully Meet STOP Act by January

A recently released Office of Inspector General report has found that the Postal Service will not be able to fully meet STOP Act requirements to provide advance electronic data (AED) on all incoming international packages by January 1, 2021. "USPS’ ability to comply with the STOP Act is not only constrained by other posts’ technical limitations, but also by uncertainty regarding the law’s implementation," the report said.
